BTC Volatility Analysis for PPI, 14th January 2026

Data Analysis

The release

Released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on 14 January 2026 at 8:30 AM EST. The Producer Price Index came in at 0.4% for November 2025, against 0.3% in September 2025. Producer prices are rising faster than before.

It arrived at the same moment as Retail Sales, Retail Sales Excluding Automobiles and Core Producer Price Index, so the reaction measured on this page belongs to all of them together.

Measured by Clometrix

Bitcoin's volatility ratio was 0.62x, against 2.08x for a typical PPI release since 2021. Its volume ratio was 0.47x, against a typical 2.30x. Under 1.5x is not a reaction at all: the market barely noticed this release. Both compare the quarter hour of the release with an ordinary quarter hour that same day, where 1.00x is no change: volatility is how far the price ranged, volume how much traded.

How Bitcoin moved

Bitcoin was at $95,190.70 when the figure came out. Fifteen minutes later it was 0.12% lower, and an hour later 0.46% higher. Its high-to-low range in the hour after was 0.96% of its price, against 0.32% in the hour before.

What made it matter

Since 2021, PPI releases in the two weeks before a Fed decision have moved Bitcoin about as much as those at other times: a median volatility ratio of 2.18x across 29, against 2.05x across 41. This one came out 14 days before the Federal Reserve's 28 January rate decision. Its own ratio of 0.62x compares with 2.18x for those, so it moved the price less than its circumstances would suggest.

What it means

Bitcoin registered a quiet reaction to the November Producer Price Index and the retail sales figures that arrived alongside it. Volatility reached only 0.62 times the level of an ordinary quarter hour, compared with the 2.08 times median recorded at PPI releases since 2021. Volume stayed at 0.47 times normal. The market registered almost no response to the 0.4 percent print or the simultaneous 0.5 percent retail sales reading.

Price action remained contained. Bitcoin stood at $95,190.70 when the data appeared. It slipped 0.12 percent in the following fifteen minutes before finishing the hour 0.46 percent higher. The high-to-low range in that hour measured 0.96 percent of spot, against 0.32 percent in the hour before the release.

The release fell fourteen days before the Federal Reserve's January policy meeting. PPI prints in that window have produced a median volatility ratio of 2.18 times since 2021. The 0.62 times outcome here therefore fell well short of the pattern observed for releases with similar timing.

Traders preparing for the next PPI release can observe that even data arriving close to a policy decision can leave Bitcoin unmoved when the surprise is small. The historical record for this event shows reactions that vary sharply from one print to the next.

About Producer Price Index

The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures the average change over time in the prices domestic producers receive for their output. It is a measure of inflation at the wholesale level that is compiled from thousands of indexes measuring producer prices by industry and product category. The index is published monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
