The release

Released by the Department of Labor on 27 September 2018 at 8:30 AM EDT. Initial Jobless Claims fell to 205K for the week ending 22nd Sep, from 206K in the week ending 15th Sep.

It arrived at the same moment as Durable Goods Orders, Durable Goods Orders Excluding Transportation, Gross Domestic Product Report and Continued Jobless Claims, so the reaction measured on this page belongs to all of them together.

How BNB moved

BNB was at $9.87 when the figure came out. Fifteen minutes later it was 0.61% lower, and an hour later 0.41% lower. Its high-to-low range in the hour after was 1.01% of its price, against 1.42% in the hour before.

Measured by Clometrix

BNB's volatility ratio was 1.80x, against 1.42x for a typical Initial Claims release since 2021. Its volume ratio was 1.06x, against a typical 1.67x. That is about what this release usually does. Both compare the quarter hour of the release with an ordinary quarter hour that same day, where 1.00x is no change: volatility is how far the price ranged, volume how much traded.

What made it matter

Since 2021, Initial Claims releases in the two weeks before a Fed decision have moved BNB about as much as those at other times: a median volatility ratio of 1.50x across 94, against 1.40x across 209. This one came out the day after the Federal Reserve's 26 September rate decision. Its own ratio of 1.80x compares with 1.40x for those, so it moved the price more than its circumstances alone would suggest.
