The release
Released by the Department of Labor on 18 January 2024 at 8:30 AM EST. Initial Jobless Claims fell to 193K for the week ending 13th Jan, from 199K in the week ending 6th Jan.
It arrived at the same moment as Continued Jobless Claims, so the reaction measured on this page belongs to all of them together.
Measured by Clometrix
TRON's volatility ratio was 1.19x, against 1.33x for a typical Initial Claims release since 2021. Its volume ratio was 1.14x, against a typical 1.53x. Under 1.5x is not a reaction at all: the market barely noticed this release. Both compare the quarter hour of the release with an ordinary quarter hour that same day, where 1.00x is no change: volatility is how far the price ranged, volume how much traded.
How TRON moved
TRON was at $0.1087 when the figure came out. Fifteen minutes later it was 0.18% higher, and an hour later 0.5% higher. Its high-to-low range in the hour after was 0.72% of its price, against 0.4% in the hour before.
What made it matter
Since 2021, Initial Claims releases in the two weeks before a Fed decision have moved TRON about as much as those at other times: a median volatility ratio of 1.36x across 92, against 1.33x across 204. This one came out 13 days before the Federal Reserve's 31 January rate decision. Its own ratio of 1.19x compares with 1.36x for those, about what its circumstances would suggest.
How it compares
Across 296 Initial Claims releases since 2021, TRON's usual price swing is 1.33x. This one was 0.90 times the usual.
Thin line: Initial Claims's usual, 1.33x. Thick line: this release, 1.19x. Under 1.5x counts as no reaction at all.
