The release

Released by the Department of Labor on 31 December 2020 at 8:30 AM EST. Initial Jobless Claims fell to 773K for the week ending 26th Dec, from 815K in the week ending 19th Dec.

It arrived at the same moment as Continued Jobless Claims, so the reaction measured on this page belongs to all of them together.

Measured by Clometrix

Polkadot's volatility ratio was 1.10x, against 1.31x for a typical Initial Claims release since 2021. Its volume ratio was 3.95x, against a typical 1.55x. Under 1.5x is not a reaction at all: the market barely noticed this release. Both compare the quarter hour of the release with an ordinary quarter hour that same day, where 1.00x is no change: volatility is how far the price ranged, volume how much traded.

How Polkadot moved

Polkadot was at $7.900 when the figure came out. Fifteen minutes later it was 1.39% higher, and an hour later 0.13% lower. Its high-to-low range in the hour after was 2.53% of its price, against 4.68% in the hour before.

What made it matter

Since 2021, Initial Claims releases in the two weeks before a Fed decision have moved Polkadot about as much as those at other times: a median volatility ratio of 1.41x across 91, against 1.26x across 203. This one was not within two weeks of a Fed decision. Its own ratio of 1.10x compares with 1.26x for those, about what its circumstances would suggest.

How it compares

Across 294 Initial Claims releases since 2021, Polkadot's usual price swing is 1.31x. This one was 0.84 times the usual.
