The release

Released by the Department of Labor on 24 November 2021 at 8:30 AM EST. Initial Jobless Claims fell to 223K for the week ending 20th Nov, from 250K in the week ending 13th Nov.

It arrived at the same moment as Durable Goods Orders, Durable Goods Orders Excluding Transportation, Gross Domestic Product Report, Personal Income and Outlays, Personal Consumption Expenditures, Core Personal Consumption Expenditures and Continued Jobless Claims, so the reaction measured on this page belongs to all of them together.

Measured by Clometrix

Solana's volatility ratio was 1.24x, against 1.39x for a typical Initial Claims release since 2021. Its volume ratio was 0.93x, against a typical 1.56x. Under 1.5x is not a reaction at all: the market barely noticed this release. Both compare the quarter hour of the release with an ordinary quarter hour that same day, where 1.00x is no change: volatility is how far the price ranged, volume how much traded.

How Solana moved

Solana was at $213.80 when the figure came out. Fifteen minutes later it was 0.58% lower, and an hour later 2.34% lower. Its high-to-low range in the hour after was 3.44% of its price, against 1.14% in the hour before.

What made it matter

Since 2021, Initial Claims releases in the two weeks before a Fed decision have moved Solana more than those at other times: a median volatility ratio of 1.48x across 92, against 1.29x across 204. This one was not within two weeks of a Fed decision. Its own ratio of 1.24x compares with 1.29x for those, about what its circumstances would suggest.

How it compares

Across 296 Initial Claims releases since 2021, Solana's usual price swing is 1.39x. This one was 0.89 times the usual.
