How NEAR Protocol reacted to Initial Jobless Claims on 1 July 2021

The short answer

Hardly a reaction. In the 15 minutes after the figure came out, NEAR Protocol's price swung 1.00 times as much as in a normal 15 minutes that day. For an Initial Claims release, 1.24 times is usual. An hour later the price was 1.01% higher.

The release

Released by the Department of Labor on 1 July 2021 at 8:30 AM EDT. Initial Jobless Claims fell to 369K for the week ending 26th Jun, from 422K in the week ending 19th Jun.

It arrived at the same moment as Continued Jobless Claims, so the reaction measured on this page belongs to all of them together.

Measured by Clometrix

NEAR Protocol's volatility ratio was 1.00x, against 1.24x for a typical Initial Claims release since 2021. Its volume ratio was 1.25x, against a typical 1.63x. Under 1.5x is not a reaction at all: the market barely noticed this release. Both compare the quarter hour of the release with an ordinary quarter hour that same day, where 1.00x is no change: volatility is how far the price ranged, volume how much traded.

How NEAR Protocol moved

NEAR Protocol was at $1.990 when the figure came out. Fifteen minutes later it was 1.01% higher, and an hour later 1.01% higher. Its high-to-low range in the hour after was 1.51% of its price, against 1.51% in the hour before.

What made it matter

Since 2021, Initial Claims releases in the two weeks before a Fed decision have moved NEAR Protocol less than those at other times: a median volatility ratio of 1.07x across 89, against 1.31x across 193. This one was not within two weeks of a Fed decision. Its own ratio of 1.00x compares with 1.31x for those, so it moved the price less than its circumstances would suggest.

How it compares

Across 282 Initial Claims releases since 2021, NEAR Protocol's usual price swing is 1.24x. This one was 0.80 times the usual.
