Bitcoin spent the week as a string of softer labor indicators arrived alongside a sharply wider trade gap.
The combination left risk assets in a narrow range heading into the weekend. With next week’s inflation prints now the focus, positioning stayed light and funding remained contained across major venues.
This Week's Macro Releases
The balance of trade for March printed at -60,306, with imports rising to 381,165 and exports at 320,859. JOLTs job openings for March came in at 7,618. Initial claims for the week ended May 2 reached 200,000 while continued claims stood at 1,782,000.
April nonfarm payrolls printed 115,000 against a consensus of 65,000 and the unemployment rate steady at 4.3 percent.
The wider gap signals stronger domestic demand that can support a firmer dollar and thereby tighten financial conditions for leveraged positions in risk assets. Higher imports relative to exports also point to sustained consumer spending that keeps liquidity from draining too quickly out of the system. The rise in job openings shows employers still competing for workers which can limit how quickly wage pressures ease and therefore how soon policy can shift toward accommodation. Elevated initial claims indicate some softening at the margin that reduces the urgency for tighter financial conditions while continued claims remaining elevated keeps the labor market from overheating in a way that would force the dollar higher. The payroll beat above consensus adds to the sense that the economy retains underlying strength so any transmission to easier liquidity arrives more gradually through reduced leverage rather than outright dollar weakness.
How Bitcoin Reacted, Measured
At the Tuesday 8:30 a.m. ET cluster Bitcoin sat at $81,223. The hour’s volatility ratio reached only 0.79x against a median of 0.89x, ranking tenth of the last twelve balance-of-trade releases. Ether moved in near lockstep, posting a 0.6 percent span.
The 10:00 a.m. JOLTs release saw Bitcoin at $81,330 with a 2.03x volatility ratio, still below the 2.60x median. Thursday’s claims print produced the quietest reaction of the week at 0.44x volatility, the lowest rank among the prior twelve. Friday’s payrolls triggered a 2.10x ratio, again below the 3.38x median.
That limited volatility at the trade data shows the market absorbed the dollar-supportive signal without forcing widespread deleveraging in crypto. The JOLTs reaction staying below its typical level indicates participants viewed the higher openings as already reflected in risk appetite so no fresh leverage was added or removed. The subdued claims response suggests traders saw little new information about liquidity paths and therefore kept positions stable rather than adjusting exposure.
Bitcoin and Ethereum Price Action
Bitcoin opened the week near $80,500 and touched an intraday high of $80,526 on May 4. It closed Sunday at $82,138.93. Ethereum followed a similar path, trading above $2,370 before closing at $2,369.04.
Ether closed the week at $2,369.04.
The contained intraday ranges show that liquidity transmission from the data releases stayed modest and did not prompt broad unwinds in leveraged long positions.
Altcoin Stories
XRP finished at $1.4728 while BNB closed at $663.66. Solana ended the week at $96.43. Moves remained modest and largely tracked Bitcoin’s range rather than showing independent drivers.
The parallel performance across majors reflects how the labor and trade prints influenced overall dollar and liquidity conditions uniformly instead of creating sector-specific shifts in risk appetite or leverage demand.
Next Week's Calendar
CPI, core CPI and core inflation are scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET. PPI and core PPI follow on Wednesday, also at 8:30 a.m. ET. Import and export prices, initial claims, continued claims, retail sales and retail sales ex-autos are all set for Thursday at the same time.
Any material surprise in the inflation prints will set the tone for positioning ahead of the following week’s FOMC minutes and will determine whether the recent labor softening translates into clearer rate-cut expectations.
The steady unemployment rate alongside the payroll beat keeps the balance between growth and easing expectations finely poised so any inflation surprise can quickly alter the path of liquidity and therefore the scope for further leverage in crypto markets.
