Released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on 2 May 2025 at 8:30 AM EDT. The economy added 158K jobs for April 2025, according to Non-Farm Payrolls, after a gain of 120K in March 2025.

How Ethereum moved

Ethereum was at $1,833.34 when the figure came out. Fifteen minutes later it was unchanged, and an hour later 0.11% higher. Its high-to-low range in the hour after was 1.17% of its price, against 0.41% in the hour before.

What made it matter

Since 2021, Non-Farm Payrolls releases in the two weeks before a Fed decision have moved Ethereum about as much as those at other times: a median volatility ratio of 3.21x across 21, against 3.39x across 49. This one came out 5 days before the Federal Reserve's 7 May rate decision. Its own ratio of 3.92x compares with 3.21x for those, so it moved the price more than its circumstances alone would suggest.

Nonfarm payrolls is the measure of the number of workers in the U.S. excluding farm workers and workers in a handful of other job classifications. This is measured by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which surveys private and government entities throughout the U.S. about their payrolls. The BLS reports the nonfarm payroll numbers to the public on a monthly basis through the closely followed “Employment Situation” report.
